Releasing an original IP AAA game in today’s marketplace is certainly a risky move, but it looks like it paid off for ARMS. Nintendo’s bizarre fighting game, which features fighters punching each other with elongated DNA strand like appendages, sold an impressive 100,652 within its first week of release in Japan, placing it at number one on the weekly sales chart.
ARMS was also a modest hit in the UK, where it debuted at number two in the sales charts, just behind Sony’s Horizon Zero Dawn. It’s only a matter of time before worldwide sales surpass one-million.
These figures are certainly commendable for an original IP, and while ARMS probably won’t do quite as well in the long run as games belonging to Nintendo’s colossal first-party franchises like Mario and Zelda, I think it’s safe to say that a sequel to ARMS is now a very real possibility.
If you’d like to get in on the elongated action, you can purchase a digital copy of ARMS from the Nintendo eShop or a physical copy from Amazon. The accolades trailer below should convince you that this is a game worthy of your cash.
We’re bearing witness to the birth of a brand new first-party Nintendo franchise, so fans should take a moment to bask in the glory.
