Electronic Essentials of the Week: Deadmau5, Breach, Coffi

Electronic music is known for its huge variety of sounds and styles, with thousands upon thousands of ever-different tracks being released every day. It is often impossible to know where to start so each week we will be selecting the best of the best in the scene to help you get the most out of one of the most varied and unpredictable genres.

Fox Stevenson – Comeback

UK artist, and relatively recent member of the Spinnin’ Records label, Fox Stevenson proves his many talents with this latest track. The vocals are smooth and uplifting and transition perfectly into a joyous melody with a pulsing bassline that gives Spinnin’ listeners a taste of Fox’s glitch-hop origins. Stevenson is definitely one to watch, with a similarly energetic collaboration with Curbi already under his belt. His talents on both vocals and production are rare for the scene and Fox has already mastered his distinctive and successful formula.

Unreleased Tracks from Deadmau5

Joel Zimmerman, aka Deadmau5, is widely known for being at the very top of the electronic scene and for the vast amount of tracks to his name. Youtuber Max24s has compiled over 90 unreleased tunes from the artist that reveal just how many gems he is still sitting on. Luscious melodies combined with thumping drops and superbly pure moments are a staple of the Deadmau5 formula and he works his wonders again here. There is speculation that some of these tracks, recorded from his various livestreams, will make it onto his new album for which a 2016 release is predicted. In similar news, another Youtuber known as Hjalte RMC has collected a large number of unreleased Pendulum tunes that remind us of the band’s epic and unmatchable signature sound.

Troyboi & Diplo – Afterhours (Sharps x Convex Remix)

The release of the original only a few weeks ago on the Mad Decent label was steeped in Troyboi’s unique and hypnotic sound with Diplo learning a few lessons from the London-born Trap tastemaker in the process. Up and coming artists Sharps and Convex smartly transform the original into a bright and euphoric joyride, with bursting basslines and melodies that nicely draw on the original for inspiration. This remix also features one of the most fitting uses of reversed vocals I’ve heard so far.

Breach – Jack (Hamdi Remix)

Undiscovered artist Hamdi draws out the catchy vocals of the original and smartly weaves them into a deep, dark tune that is reminiscent of EDX while injecting a burst of trademark deep house groove that is irresistible not to get moving to. Stay for the second drop, which manages to exaggerate the pulsating energy of the original with complex rhythms and an unbelievable bassline.

Coffi – Power Moves

From the darker end of the scene comes Coffi’s latest stomper, which confronts the listener with its raw and irresistibly filthy sounds. Member of the pioneering Gentlemen’s Club label, Coffi’s latest beast is uncontrollably wild and full of pace, with drums that storm right out of the speakers and an uncatchable bassline that is a staple of frequent collaborators 50 Carrot and Soloman.

Speed Round
Tiesto & Oliver Heldens – Wombass (Packed with typical Heldens energy and thriving melodies)
Hucci – A Perfect Storm (Top of the trap game Hucci works Michael Jackson into a dark and punishing track that gets better and better throughout)
Lido & Santell – The Passion Project (A heartfelt and emotional EP that brims with slick vocal work and dreamy sounds)
Skrillex & Diplo – To U (George Remix) (A remix that you don’t want to be caught sleeping on, with never before heard sounds that combine to elevate the original to a higher place)
