Project Zomboid Helicopter Event: Should You Hide or Leave?

There are few moments as bewildering in games as hearing a helicopter in Project Zomboid for the first time. It usually happens when you’re sorting out your hot dogs and minding your business. This is a meta event that will happen on every mode of the game in the early days, unless it’s been turned off in Sandbox.

What Does the Helicopter Actually Do?

The helicopter is an off-screen event identified by rotor noise. It attracts zombies, and it can follow a survivor it spots outside. You aren’t able to see it as of Build 42.

That can turn a previously manageable street into a crowded route. It also means hiding doesn’t stop all danger: zombies can still move through your area towards the helicopter’s sound.

What Should You Do If You’re Already Indoors?

Stay inside a building you can defend or leave safely. Keep food and water nearby, and check your escape routes before settling in.

Close curtains to reduce visibility to zombies, but don’t treat them as special helicopter camouflage. Being indoors is the important distinction for avoiding the aircraft’s attention.

Listen for movement around doors and windows. Hiding is a plan, not permission to ignore a building being broken into.

What If It Spots You Outside?

Avoid returning directly to your main base with the helicopter following. Move towards a route you already know, preferably away from dense groups and valuable supplies.

A working car can help, but only if it has fuel and a usable road ahead. Don’t swap an open escape route for a stalled vehicle surrounded by zombies.

If your shelter becomes unsafe, leave while you still have an exit. You’re protecting the survivor, not defending a particular kitchen until the bitter end. You can always come back and clear the house again later.

Can You Get Advance Warning?

The Automated Emergency Broadcast System, or AEBS, can announce “air activity detected” on the event day.

Its radio frequency varies between worlds, so find a radio with the station preset or locate it by tuning. Don’t copy a frequency from somebody else’s run. Quick tip: check police cars and radios within police stations.

Does the Helicopter Only Appear Once?

Check your world’s Helicopter setting. Its options include Never, Once, Sometimes and Often. It will always trigger once on Apocalypse and other default modes.

After an event, approach familiar streets cautiously. The helicopter may have left, but the zombies it moved haven’t politely returned to their original positions and are probably peckish.
