Mechanics in Project Zomboid is an obtuse and often confusing, um, mechanic. Especially when it comes to trying to figure out exactly why your car keep stalling.
Well, 99 times out of 100, it will be because your engine is low condition. Pre-Build 42, most cars could still somewhat reliably run with 45-60% engine condition, but it seems like that has been lowered. Now, if your car engine has <60% condition, it will need repairing or replacing or you will just constantly stall.
To repair your engine in Project Zomboid, approach the hood and press E. You will need Mechanics Level 5, a Wrench and Spare Engine Parts. You can claim Spare Engine Parts from other vehicles with Mechanics Level 4 and a Wrench, but they can also be found somewhat occasionally around old garages.

To level up Mechanics, be sure to read Mechanics skill books to give you an XP boost, then install and reinstall parts of cars for XP. You can also watch VHS tapes like Carzone, Z-Squad S2.03, OSCC ’92, and Stock Cars to give you significant XP boosts.
It’s important to not let your car stall too often in Project Zomboid, as constantly restarting your engine will also drain your battery, which will cause a whole bunch of other issues.
