PlayStation To Finally Close PS3 and Vita Storefronts

PS3

After a previously curtailed closure back in 2021 thanks to fan backlash, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that the PlayStation Store will now be phased out for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

The closure will begin in August 2026 for PlayStation 3 users in Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua, with additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries following later in the year. The PlayStation Store on both PS3 and PS Vita will close globally in July 2027. After the shutdown, players will no longer be able to purchase digital games, DLC or other content through the stores. Previously purchased content will remain available to download “for the foreseeable future.” That quote is a worrying one.

Sony said the decision was made because it needs to focus resources on newer platforms, stating: “As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future.”

It’s difficult to know how much money it really must cost them to keep these storefronts going, but you can’t imagine it’s much to the detriment of their gigantic empire.

The company also acknowledged the impact on long-time players, saying: “We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming.”

What is truly disappointing is releasing this news as a double dose of nonsense directly alongside news of PlayStation’s discless future, presumably as a way of limiting its impact by comparison. Everyone rallied pretty hard in 2021 to keep the storefronts going, but will we all have that same energy in 2026?
