As long as you wanna be courageous, I promise you, we’re gonna see some changes.
So goes the chorus line of George The Poet’s latest single, ‘Search Party’, and it’s quite the message, but it’s also the message we need right now. It’s coming up to two weeks since the general election left Britain faced with five years of uncut Tory funk; ironic, given the number of cuts to come. Of course, it’s what the British public voted for, and even with an electoral system based around more proportional representation the Tories still would’ve come out on top, but the actual numbers that voted against the Cuntservatives far outweigh those that did.
Which is why you’ve seen plenty of outcry on your social media (though, that’s partially to do with them just showing you what you want to see) and protests on the streets, and this is what we need, because our nationwide shafting should not be taken lying down. Do not fall foul of the depressing weight of defeat, stand tall and stand strong with the passion and drive you had before that ultimately inevitable end result. The fight might be tougher now, but don’t give up, because that’s exactly what they want you to do. If you want to see some changes, you’ve got to be courageous.
I know this is just a SINGLE OF THE WEEK feature, and we’ve covered post-election blues HERE and HERE, but the message contained within this week’s single choice is one that needs highlighting because it’s important; outside of George The Poet, his music, and his written word, it’s important, but this is George The Poet we’re talking about here and with him the message is considered, concise, passionate, soulful, personal, and, of course, poetic. It’s angry, but not irrationally so.
Soundtrack your protest.
Oh, and because, you know, this actually is supposed to be a SINGLE OF THE WEEK piece; for those unfamiliar with George The Poet, he is, as his moniker suggests, a poet – both of performance and the page, having recently released his debut poetry collection, also called Search Party, and previously made the top five of the BBC’s SOUND OF 2015 list off the back of his already impressive musical output, as exemplified in this single what I chose to be SINGLE OF THE WEEK, and the considerable endorsement he’s received from support slots for the likes of Nas and Common, and collaborations with Labrinth, Emile Sande, and Idris Elba.
So, alongside SINGLE OF THE WEEK, why not consider this your POEM OF THE WEEK too (GET SUBMITTING Y’ALL POETS OUT THERE), and a message of hope in the struggle as well. Be courageous.
