UK General Election 2015: The Not So Silver Lining

The voting system is fucked. The welfare system is fucked and within 100 days, your basic human rights will be fucked too.

Over the weekend protesters flooded the streets of Cardiff and London, the press barely covered it, and when they did they failed to mention the use of tear gas and black bags, but that’s not the only thing the majority of mainstream press is leaving out about current events.

With the Conservative’s major opposition bickering over who to elect their leader, the Tory government are planning to push out as many of their policies as possible that were previously rebuffed by the Lib Dems in what is being dubbed the ‘100 day welfare blitz’.

Their plans include expanding the ‘bedroom tax’, so it affects over a million more people. Whilst widening the scope of this inhumane tax, they also plan to cut welfare, targeting specifically people with children, disabilities and well, it goes without saying, the unemployed.

But DON’T WORRY because on top of this, our savior David Cameron also plans on scrapping the HUMAN RIGHTS ACT and replacing it with our own special act.

It sounds like a work of fiction, but I promise you it isn’t.

I know what you’re thinking, dear reader… “But Bethan, this is what the UK people voted for”. I disagree with you. There wasn’t a single Conservative MP elected in the entirety of Northern Ireland and only one MP was elected in Scotland.

On top of this, it has been suggested that students were turned away at polling stations across the country and on Sunday it materialized that a constituency FORGOT to open two ballot boxes with over 1000 votes in.

Without going too in-depth about how much our current voting system is a complete farce, you can already see what a complete joke this election was.

Getting mad however solves nothing. If you’re genuinely as mad as I am, then join me in doing something, go to local protests, donate to food banks and try to help your community as much as you possibly can and when this is all over we can mount our horses and chase after a fox together.
