The Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time Collector’s Edition Is A Decent Farewell

By the look on your face I can tell you like the art cards, wee laddie.

Despite its clear rough edges and lower budget, I couldn’t help but fall in love with Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time last year. A love letter to the franchise and a full stop for an IP that’s been stop-start from almost the day it aired, Battle Through Time wasn’t a completely necessary epilogue but one that I’m glad exists.

Released long after the game first came out digitally, the Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time Collector’s Edition from Limited Run Games is the big blowout bon voyage for the series as likely the last major bit of memorabilia released for it, though perhaps it’s not quite major enough.

The most obvious thing about the Collector’s Edition is the box it comes in: a tall, sleek package with different landscapes from the show across all sides and Jack on top on the lid. It’s unique, so much so that it doesn’t seem like there’s a front or back to it. I’ve been as confused by this box as Jack with basically any technology.

There’s plenty more goodies inside with the game itself, though.

There’s a CD (which is always fun just for the novelty of owning a CD) of the soundtrack that’s comprised of ten songs.

A collection of art cards featuring scenes from the games.

And a massive double-sided 18″ x 24″ poster.

But the main attraction here is the 7″ Samurai Jack statue, featuring Jack leaping through the air, katana in hand.

There’s even a katana letter-opener and a place to rest it, though it did seem to always keel over for me.

Everything in here is obviously high quality, as you would come to expect from LRG. The statue is the clear highlight, detailed and really catches the eye, and all the various art cards and huge poster will likely be nice additions for SamJack collectors, but it ultimately feels like a slight missed opportunity to go all out as a true celebration of the show.

A 7″ vinyl over a CD would have made a bit more sense (though obviously would’ve ramped the price up), as would have some kind of t-shirt or maybe even a Blu-Ray including the various featurettes released on YouTube before the game’s release and perhaps the final season.

While the Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time Collector’s Edition is still a good send-off for the series, I was always waiting for the magic to begin.
