Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda is now one step closer to fruition, as the business move has been recently approved by the EU. In order to finalise the deal, Microsoft were subject to the European Commission’s approval, specifically with regards to any anti-trust concerns. If the EU had a problem with the deal, it could have set everything back months, even maybe years.
So Microsoft Will Soon Own Bethesda?
It sure seems that way. Microsoft asked for the EC’s approval back in February, and it looks like that approval was granted on March 5th. The EC also didn’t attach any rulings or conditions to the acquisition, meaning Microsoft are free to carry on with the process.
This all puts Microsoft within striking distance of owning not just Bethesda, but Arkane Studios, MachineGames, id Software and Tango Gameworks. The Arkane and Tango Gameworks acquisitions are particularly interesting, seeing as both studios are developing timed PlayStation exclusives in the form of Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo respectively.
