Single of the Week: Deafkid – ‘Rosary’

Another week, another Monday, you hate your life and your routine existence. That’s okay though, part of that ever repeating pattern of minutes, hours, days, and weeks, is the constant release of new music, looking to hook its fingers into your ears and make love to your brain through your face. You may not like Mondays, but Monday means new releases, and we here at Cultured Vultures LOVE new releases. I’m unsure if this means we like Mondays though.

Anyway, once a week, to save you the trouble, we net up the latest batch of singles, throw them on the deck, gut them, and fry them up. In doing so we’re able to serve up the catch of the week for you to just straight up enjoy, having done the hard work for you. This week it was I who were sent out on the trawler looking for good stock. There’s some good stuff out this week, but the absolute best is ‘Rosary’ by Deafkid.

Four minutes and sixteen seconds of experimental indie that takes in electronica, folk, a mishmash of instrumentation, and an almost nursery rhyme-like quality to haunting, almost-religious effect. It slowly rides along on itself, rising steadily upon layers that hazily add themselves to the cloudy night along the way. Another reason this is the catch (single) of the week is because coinciding with ‘Rosary’ is the release of the EP, Dialects, that it kicks off. Moneysworth.

Deafkid themselves are London-based duo Christopher Lockington and Florian Sauvaire, who started out in the shadowy background of production jobs, having worked with the likes of, experimental hip hop artist, Ghostpoet. Deafkid sees them taking to the foreground, and given the critical acclaim poured all over their last single ‘Vigilante’, and the AA side single ‘Talk’/’Pig’ prior to that, it was clearly the right decision. A clear decision made positively oxygen-esque by ‘Rosary’.

‘ave a listen innit, then check out da EP.
