5 Most Promising AEW Breakout Stars

Beyond the Omegas and Moxleys, who should you be looking out for in AEW?

All Elite Wrestling have excelled in their debut year, putting on three fantastic wrestling shows in the space of a few months. With AEW’s biggest show to the year – All Out – on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about who is destined to breakout as AEW’s most promising young stars. AEW’s deal with TBS means we’ll be seeing a lot more of AEW in the coming year, which can only mean that certain performers will be given ample screen time to help develop their in-ring characters and get over with a whole new audience.

The majority of the AEW roster have now been given slight exposure on one of the three pay-per-view broadcasts, so fans are getting a better idea of who’s who and which wrestlers they’re going to be particularly invested in. We’re going to run down a list of five of AEW’s most promising acts, where they could end up once the AEW weekly TV show begins and how they’ll develop as a whole.

Make sure you drop your own favourites in the comments section below.

5. Luchasaurus & Jungle Boy

The wrestler formerly known as Lucha Underground’s Vibora has become a regular feature for AEW alongside his pal Jungle Boy. Putting these two together as a tandem has made for amazing television, not only from a wrestling point-of-view but also as genuine entertainment. They both have that very unique look to them to make them marketable stars and could appeal to all demographics while remaining credible stars in the realms of kayfabe.

Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus have yet to find much success on television, though they were most recently involved in a huge triple threat tag team match against The Dark Order and Angelico & Jack Evans, putting on a tag wrestling clinic.

Both are ridiculously talented, Luchasaurus being the versatile powerhouse while Jungle Boy is the daring high-flyer. Their tag team chemistry has come so far in such a short space of time, and I hope they one day break-out as the top guys in the AEW Tag Team Division.

2. Kip Sabian

True story: Kip and I have a personal feud that dates back to 2017, but nevertheless, I’m happy to see him breakout on the global wrestling scene as part of All Elite Wrestling. ‘Superbad’ recently stole the show in a match with Hangman Adam Page, becoming somewhat of a viral sensation after his unorthodox interaction with a ringside fan.

Sabian’s in-ring ability is second to none, and his potential is beyond huge. The British sensation is only scratching the surface with his heel persona, and I can only hope he’ll be allowed to bring all his personality to AEW when it debuts on weekly television.

Kip has been given a huge rub right off the bat, picking up the very first victory on a Buy-In over Sammy Guevara and then having this encounter with the potential first-ever AEW World Champion. Hopefully a mid-card division will be carved out as time goes on, with a mid-card title being forged to help add some merit to these up-and-coming stars. Kip is the ideal first wrestler to compete for that title.

3. Shawn Spears

Tye DIllinger Smackdown

WWE’s Perfect 10 made the jump to the independent circuit earlier this year with much fanfare. Re-emerging under the moniker of Shawn Spears, he took the world by storm by confirming his belated signing to All Elite Wrestling. Spears remained under the radar until his involvement at Fyter Fest, smashing a steel chair over the skull of Cody Rhodes, splitting his head open and causing much uproar in the wrestling community.

Spears seems to be on the road to All Out for an eventual grudge match with his pal Cody, which is a huge nod to his namesake and star power, despite his disappointing run in WWE. Spears holds himself well as a top heel and had quite a presence in the trios match at Fight for the Fallen. Shawn fits in well and could definitely be pushed even further after his rivalry with Rhodes concludes in Chicago.

Spears could potentially be molded into an AEW World Champion in the near future. Perhaps if Hangman defeats Jericho at All Out, Spears would be the perfect first challenger on TBS Network.

4. Darby Allin

The former professional skateboarder turned professional wrestler has had a great start to his run in AEW. Darby Allin has become one of the biggest breakout stars of the year across all of independent wrestling, now finding himself being booked for massive attractions such as PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles and Progress’ Super Strong Style 16.

Darby found himself competing at consecutive AEW pay-per-views, first in a spectacular match against Cody and then in the recent trios match alongside the likes of Shawn Spears, MJF and Joey Janela. Allin is being presented as one of the enigmas of the AEW roster, with a lot of potential to do big things and generate quite the fanbase should he continue astonishing audiences with his death-defying spots.

Allin could make for quite the underdog hero over the next year, if he starts being credited with a few wins: he has that edgy, modern-day aesthetic that people yearn for in their indie wrestlers. He is the typical anti-WWE wrestler and I’m sure that will carry him through his time in AEW.

5. MJF

Quite possibly the most talked about AEW performer outside of Jericho and Moxley, Maxwell Jacob Friedman has soared to new heights since debuting at Double or Nothing. His charisma has made him a star on the mic, getting heat from almost anyone he’s put in front of. This sort of heel character is going to excel in AEW.

Heel performers are becoming increasingly difficult to find, with the majority of ‘smart’ crowds choosing to support the bad guys and make them come across like anti-heroes. Names like Kevin Owens, The Miz and Rusev have all struggled to maintain their dirty tactics despite being some of the most talented heels in any promotion. Eventually, they all had to resort to becoming a babyface.

MJF has the rare quality of being able to keep up his villain persona and actually have people hate him. If he carries on riding this wave of controversy, there’s no doubt in my mind that he could become one of the greatest heels of all time. MJF should certainly find himself positioned highly on the card once the weekly TV deal starts, maybe even in the championship picture like he almost was a few months back.
