5 Most Popular Dating Apps: Pros and Cons

Online dating is a wonderful thing. Recently, the taboo has been knocked back immensely and we can all agree that the prospect of increasing our chances of getting a relationship while on the toilet is not a bad thing. In fact, if you think about it, it’s kind of the productivity that those new-age self-help books would love, so maybe by doing it we’re taking charge of our lives?

While online dating should never be a replacement for meeting people in real life, it does possess advantages and perhaps help people connect whom would never have had the chance to do so. So, based on my own personal experiences using as many apps as I can fit on my shitty 8GB device, I thought I would lay out some pros and cons of what is available.

1. Tinder

Tinder is perhaps the most well known of all of these. Upload pictures from your Facebook, swipe depending on whether you are attracted to the other person and  see if they reciprocate before you’re allowed to send messages. Now more business savvy by being an option for a much better paid for service, it ultimately is one of the easiest to use and most popular dating apps.

Pros: Number of people on it, accessibility, the ability to screen people so not receiving messages from strangers.

Cons: More shallow than others with not much space for an “about me” section, lots of bots directing you to cam shows.

2. Plenty of Fish

Plenty of Fish

Plenty Of Fish is perhaps one of the classic dating apps as you can specify the kind of person you’re looking for, create your profile and what area you’re searching in, and you’re off. It has many users, most of them real. The website still looks and feels like it was when I first started using it.

Pros: amount of people, ability to custom your profile with a lot of pictures and information allowing for more messages based on personality, social features like meet-ups.

Cons: some people may be bombarded with messages, very outdated and not very smooth interface.

3. Happn

Happn appeals to the romantic, more Mark Corrigan sides of us, who when we walk past a beautiful person on the street, start picturing a life together with them. The idea is simple, if people have the app and you walk past them, it shows you and you have the chance to Tinder style match with them.

Pros: introduces a spark of romance into leaving the house, a more social way than other apps, you know you’re most likely in radius of these people.

Cons: worrying if you looked good that day, the idea that you may see them again and they didn’t like you, and general anxieties that mean it’s a little bit tougher to go to the local shop to buy a pint of milk.

4. OKCupid

OKCupid resembles some sort of love child between Tinder and Plenty Of Fish, despite chronologically that being impossible. The site has an emphasis on meaningful connections, which often branches into too much detail, and allows a number of ways to connect to the smaller amount of users it appears to have.

Pros: Nice to use, handles nicely and rarely has any issues.

Cons: You get bombarded with survey questions which seem more likely to help you assist a marketing intern than find love.

5. Luxy

Luxy is an app for the rich. It’s what would have been used to connect with people in The Wolf of Wall Street and holds no bars that its doucheness is what makes it work. It’s a niche market and it sticks to it honorably. The site helps you by verifying your income, letting you pay to message before you match, but ultimately holds a sleek, modern look that fits its appeal and demeanor.

Pros: If you fit into its clientele, you may think this is heaven, somewhere to post your try-hard pics without getting called out on it.

Cons: I literally have no money.
