5 Long-Awaited Books by Cult Authors

Sometimes it can be tough being a fan. Sometimes you have to wait a long time for that next piece of art that you crave so badly. Sometimes a lot can change in that time, you can get married, have kids, maybe even beat Dark Souls. Though, in any line of work, contracts get missed, work gets delayed and relationships sour. Sometimes fans are left hanging, and sometimes the authors go off the grid without saying a word. Nonetheless, it leaves a book shaped hole in all of our hearts.

1. ‘Mother Howl’ by Craig Clevenger

Craig Clevenger is best known for his debut novel The Contortionist’s Handbook and his sophomore novel Dermaphoria. He’s published essays on the craft, taught workshops, and become a hero to some for the way that he manages to create interesting characters in a world that is all too familiar, and splice sentences that leave us in wonder while breaking our hearts.

Originally titled Saint Heretic, Clevenger’s third novel was plagued by complications by published MacAdam/Cage, and Clevenger is known for being particular with his writing and editing process. Though, Clevenger has announced that he has finished his third novel, now titled Mother Howl, and hopefully this means that we won’t be waiting long.

2. ‘Godspeed’ by Will Christopher Baer

Baer is praised by fans of neo-noir and sharp writing alike. His famous trilogy telling the tale of disgraced cop Phineos Poe was a hit among the literary community, and Kiss Me, Judas might be one of the finest debut novels in a long time. Baer is known for his extensive writing, though, he would edit and change the books between hardback and paperback release, never allowing a typo or something he was unhappy with to slip through. He openly admits that he could spend the rest of his life just rewriting the same book over and over.

Godspeed is Baer’s fourth novel, it was spoken about a long time ago, amidst a short story collection and a screenplay. It’s got fans pumped for years, hoping that it’ll be the year of the return of Baer. What makes it worse is that he is notoriously silent, living off the grid and not many people get in touch with him, preview artwork made it on Amazon, but nothing more of Godspeed has been said in a long time.

3 . ‘Polo Is My Life’ and ‘Prince Jellyfish’ by Hunter S. Thompson

Hunter S Thompson has left a lasting impression on not both journalism but literature in general. The novel, written after his breakout Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The novel, Polo Is My Life, was meant to be releasing in 1999, and even assigned an ISBN. Though, it still hasn’t surfaced.

Prince Jellyfish was Thompson’s first novel, and after being rejected never saw the light of day. Though, due to Thompson’s successful Fear and Loathing… his earlier novel The Rum Diary saw publication. As Harper Lee has shown us, it is somewhat possible that an elusive manuscript can see the light of publication.

4. Pretty much anything by J D Salinger

Salinger is famous for his novel Catcher In The Rye – you may have heard of it. Salinger’s writing was masked in anonymity, and fans rarely saw more work from him other than the collections Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey, Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction.

According to the documentary Salinger, there was a timetable left by Salinger after his death for releases from 2015 – 2020. These books expanded on the universe created by Salinger and his wonderful characters that are loved so much. The only thing is, though, it’s 2016, and nothing new has been published. When it happens though, fans will flock to the bookstores to read a new book by the author who has inspired millions.

5. Unknown by Bret Easton Ellis

Bret Easton Ellis is the writer who taught us to disappear here and made us analyse business cards. The author of acclaimed books such as The Rules of Attraction, Glamorama, Less Than Zero and American Psycho has now gone 6 years without releasing a book. While it’s not the longest gap in his bibliography, many were disappointed by Imperial Bedrooms and are looking to see what Ellis’ next outing will look like. On a Periscope session, Ellis noted the wait for his novel, and seemed to hint that it was on progress, but didn’t offer any information as to completion or release. The title Tranquil Reflections has been thrown around on the internet, but at this point it’s hard to say whether it’s someone playing a prank or an honest clue of the work to come.
