March is slowly but surely ending and we’ve had some hits along the way, especially with the long-awaited Far Cry 5 and Ni No Kuni 2 reaching fans all around the world, along with Detective Pikachu coming to Poké-fans in the West. Next month isn’t pulling any punches either, as Sony is bringing out the big guns with some of their biggest releases in the past few years. It’s time to see exactly what April has waiting for gaming, with the biggest new games of April 2018.

1. Extinction

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Release Date: April 10, 2018

Extinction looks like it’s trying to be a lot of things. The developers have said it’s inspired by the likes of Godzilla, David and Goliath, and Attack on Titan. Iron Galaxy is known more for its fighting games, but in terms of gameplay, Extinction plays more like a fast action game along the lines of Bayonetta or Devil May Cry.

The game puts a lot of focus on how free you are to move around the environment, and how much the environment bends to what happens in the course of combat as you defend towns against giant ogres called Ravenii. The developers have been promising a high amount of freedom of movement, and that everything in these towns and environments will be destructible. This game has a lot of potential to do things right, but also to do things wrong, depending on how they implement these features.

It looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun, essentially being a much more fast-paced version of Shadow of the Colossus with a lot more going on around the giants. Extinction looks to be one of the more interesting releases of this month.

2. Yakuza 6

Platform: PS4
Release Date: April 17, 2018

Although this game was released almost a year and a half ago in Japan, it’s releasing for the rest of the world in the middle of April. This violent street-brawler has you play as the ex-yakuza Kazuma Kiryu who ends up searching for his daughter, caught up in a web of intrigue.

After Yakuza 4 and 5, which both had multiple playable characters, Yakuza 6 kicks it back down a notch and gives you control over only Kazuma Kiryu for the end of the Dragon of Dojima story arc.

The franchise is known for its over-the-top combat, with the newest entry in the series looking to be no exception. Roaming the streets of Kamurocho will be as flashy and brutal as never before when Yakuza 6 releases in the West.

3. God of War

Platform: PS4
Release Date: April 20, 2018

The long-awaited newest entry in the God of War franchise has Kratos take on a new pantheon of gods, now with a son to his side. The mysterious world-serpent Jörmungandr and giants are only a few of the brand new creatures you’ll have to face in the longest game in the series so far.

The game will surely be full of surprises, as beside the few trailers and the many questions answered by Cory Barlog, we don’t know much about the game. Thankfully, the studios are doing a great job at having a lock on what information people know about the game.

With gameplay that’s very different from what fans of the series will be used to from the previous games, God of War is a completely new step for the franchise, lore-wise, character-wise and combat-wise. Not much is the same except for Kratos, but even he has changed since killing himself to unleash Hope unto the world.

4. Nintendo Labo

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release Date: April 20, 2018

This one’s technically cheating, but the newest Nintendo innovation that had fans scratching their head in confusion whilst pre-ordering is arriving near the end of this month. The sets of cardboard come with software that lets users program new uses for the different parts and sets. With this and Super Mario Maker, it seems quite plausible that Nintendo is trying to make programming more accessible for even kids at younger ages.

The two different sets will have an assortment of mini-games ready for you to play after you’ve assembled the different cardboard set-ups that Labo is designed for use with. Who knows what the possibilities of Nintendo Labo are once they let you use your own cardboard sets. It’ll be interesting to see what people do with the new Nintendo Labo sets when they release later this month.

5. BattleTech

Platform: PC
Release Date: April 24, 2018

The developers of Shadowrun Returns are working on a new sci-fi turn-based tactical game set in 3025. You control an army of BattleMechs while fighting in a civil war, forging alliances and contacts, while obliterating your foes. You have to make sure that your BattleMechs aren’t destroyed in battle though, as they’re already starting to age.

You play as a mercenary aiding the cause of a noble whose kingdom was taken from them by a tyrant who brought the people to their knees. The way you lead the war will be your choice, but can you lead it the way you need to?

Those were the biggest games of April 2018. Are there any games you think should be on this list, or do you even think something shouldn’t be on this list? Let us know in the comments.

If you’re still working your way through this month’s biggest games, you’ll probably be interested to see that Far Cry 5 has a secret ending. If Far Cry isn’t your cup of tea, maybe No Man’s Sky coming to Xbox One piques your interest.
