5 Best Wrestling Tag Teams of 2017 So Far

WWE DIY

As we continue our look at the best of 2017 we turn our attention towards the tag team division. Tag wrestling is often maligned but when it is done well it can be every bit as good as singles wrestling. In both the 80s and the Attitude Era the WWE treated the tag division with more respect than it currently does and because of this most of the great tag wrestling is found outside of Raw and Smackdown.

This is a tough one because by the end of the year a few of these teams might not be together any more and for differing reasons two of them have already split up. That is the nature of modern tag wrestling though as when one, or both, members of a team get to a certain level one will inevitably turn on the other.

Without further ado, here are the best tag teams of 2017 so far.

1. South Pacific Power Trip

The South Pacific Power Trip (Travis Banks & TK Cooper) started the year with a run of matches in PROGRESS that were almost impossibly good. Every match they had this year was around the 4 star level or higher. Unfortunately TK Cooper’s visa expired, along with that of his girlfriend and valet Dahlia Black, and the pair had to return to New Zealand. Hopefully he is able to return to the UK wrestling scene in the not too distant future, but it does mean that this team will almost certainly have slipped out of this list by year’s end.

2. The Hardy Boyz

The Hardy Boyz have had one hell of a 2017 so far, having held the TNA, ROH and WWE Raw Tag Titles in the space of 30 days. During WrestleMania weekend they had two ladder matches in the space of 24 hours and both of them were excellent. The first of them was their last match in ROH, against the Young Bucks, which was absolutely spectacular, and the second was their triumphant return at WrestleMania. It has been the best in-ring year for the Hardy Boyz since their heyday and it will be interesting to see if WWE ever pull the trigger on the Broken gimmick.

3. #DIY

#DIY are another team that will probably not be on this list come the end of the year, due to Tommaso Ciampa’s heel turn after their loss at NXT TakeOver: Chicago. The quality of what they did this year before their split is easily enough for them to take a spot on this list though. Their matches at the TakeOver shows in Orlando and Chicago were both spectacular and if their match against each other from last year’s Cruiserweight Classic is anything to go by we can look forward to a great singles feud between them.

4. War Machine

It’s time for some big lads. War Machine are what the Ascension would be like if they were really fucking good. They are a team that I will never be tired of watching. They won the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Titles against TenCozy in a great match at Sakura Genesis but lost them to the Guerrillas of Destiny in another really good match at Dominion. They have also spent the year wrestling extensively in ROH.

5. Authors of Pain

Lastly we have the Authors of Pain. In my opinion they have exceeded any expectations people had for them. Also, it would be a bit weird if I didn’t include a team that hasn’t lost all year. They are very young and have the wisdom of Paul Ellering to guide them, which will come in handy now they have moved away from their feuds with #DIY and the Revival.

There were a few teams that just missed the cut that could end up forcing their way in by the end of the year. Chief among these are the Young Bucks, Roppongi Vice and British Strong Style.
