There has been plenty of confusion about microtransactions in Borderlands 3 ever since the game was first announced earlier this year. Seemingly contradictory statements have come out of both Gearbox Software, the developer of the series, and publisher 2K Games about whether any paid-for additions would be available for purchase when it releases.

Responding to a request for comment from Eurogamer, 2K Games confirmed that Borderlands 3 would contain microtransactions. These in-game purchases would be cosmetic in nature, though, and therefore wouldn’t give players who bought them any unfair advantages during gameplay.

“Players will have the option to purchase certain cosmetic items like character, vehicle, and weapon skins,” said a 2K representative. “But none of these purchases would be considered pay-to-win or impacting on the gameplay, like weapons or actual gear.”

The issue initially became muddied when Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford made it clear in a livestream that the sequel would have no microtransactions or “free-to-play junk.” However, an interview with creative director Paul Sage from Game Informer suggested the company would be selling skins and costumes. Pitchford later took offence at what he felt was journalists taking his quotes out of context.

Whatever the case, players can look forward to buying extra cosmetic items for their weapons and characters when Borderlands 3 releases this September.
