“Never say never” is a common expression when it comes to professional wrestling, as we never know when surprises are next on the horizon. This was never more evident than with Edge’s surprise return in the Royal Rumble match. Coming in at number 21, the ‘Rated R-Superstar’ put on a thrilling show in his return after a 9 year hiatus due to a neck injury in 2011.

This is a huge and welcome surprise, as Edge is one of the most decorated superstars in WWE history and he never received a proper sendoff after such an illustrious career. The Rumble gave us some exciting possibilities for Edge to work with now that he is back in the squared circle. So with that in mind here are 10 possible opponents that would be perfect for Edge to feud with down the line.

Make sure you leave your own dream feuds in the comments below.

10. The Revival

Yes, we’re starting with a tag team and it’s not a mistake. Edge has had a legendary singles career but he began as a tag team wrestler and he has a history of awesome tag partners including Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton, and Hulk Hogan. By far his most iconic and best pairing was with longtime friend Christian, who never got his retirement match either.

A fun tag match with The Revival is a great way for E and C to go out, giving one last great tag match and one more hilarious 5 second pose.

9. Rey Mysterio

Mysterio has history with Edge as both a partner and rival with multiple classic matches between them. These two always deliver when in the ring together and as we have seen with his recent matches with Andrade, Rey has no problem delivering an exciting match. One more midair spear counter would be a great lasting image for a retirement match.

8. John Cena

For both performers, when going over their respective resumes their 2006 rivalry together has to sit at the top of their all-time great career feuds. The feud provided so many memorable moments, including: Edge slapping Cena’s dad, Cena dumping Edge into a river and Cena suplexing him through a stack of tables in their amazing TLC match. One more match between these two would be an easy sell.

7. Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens has consistently been one of the best performers in WWE since his debut in 2015, having a number of memorable rivalries with: John Cena, Sami Zayn, and AJ Styles. ‘The Prizefighter’ vs ‘The Rated R Superstar’ is an exciting match up, that is a worthy addition to that list. An easy starting point to the feud would be if Kevin Owens won the revived King of the Ring tournament, which Edge won in 2001, and the two clash to see who the true King of Kings is.

6. Samoa Joe

Samoa Joe’s intensity and authenticity is unrivaled in WWE. He turns everything he touches into gold and is more than capable of tearing the house down with the ‘Rated-R Superstar’. Both men have a special knack of tapping into the crowd that would make this match an instant classic.

5. Shinsuke Nakamura

Nakamura captured the Intercontinental title with a brutality and mean streak not seen since he was in NJPW. Edge thrives in matches where his opponent’s style clashes with his, and Nakamura would provide an interesting clash of style with his stiff strikes against Edge’s masterful counters.

4. Andrade

Andrade

Rey Mysterio has said that, in the ring, Andrade reminds him of being in the ring with Eddie and this is clear from their series of amazing matches together. Someone else that had a great series of matches with Eddie was Edge. Andrade is the smoothest wrestler on the roster right now and he meshes well with every style. An added bonus would be that this could also bring a surprise return of Vickie Guerrero to help neutralize Zelina Vega.

3. Drew McIntyre

‘The Scottish Psychopath’ has been having an excellent run since returning to WWE. He has completely reinvented himself as a top superstar with a bright future, having stellar matches against Kurt Angle and Cedric Alexander, showing his power and versatility in the ring. Another classic against ‘The Rated-R Superstar’ would help cement Drew’s legacy.

2. Daniel Bryan

Daniel Bryan Rusev
Another wrestler forced to retire that made a surprising return to the ring, and since coming back Bryan has since won the WWE Championship and reclaimed his spot as the best wrestler in WWE today. The two had a match on RAW in 2010 but Bryan was not yet the superstar he is today and it is definitely time for a rematch.

Edge vs Bryan is a main event match on any card. Seeing these two lock up would be magic and a sure-fire classic.

1. AJ Styles

This feud writes itself, with Edge eliminating Styles from the Rumble. AJ Styles’ moniker on Smackdown Live was the guy that built the brand since being drafted there in 2016. It would be hard to argue against that, as AJ held the top prize on the blue brand and routinely had the best match of the night on the show until being drafted to RAW earlier this year.

If AJ built the house then Edge definitely laid the foundation. Hopefully Styles’ shoulder injury is not too severe but in any case these two have a ready made feud when the time comes.

From starting out as one of the Smackdown Six, to being the face of SmackDown for the majority of his career routinely holding the World Title and closing out SmackDown until his 2011 retirement. A clash between these two ring generals to determine who is Mr. SmackDown once and for all is very exciting, and the most interesting match for Edge to close out his legendary career on.
