Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – How To Ride Your Shield

There are many ways of getting around in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but arguably the coolest way is shield surfing. It’s a pretty situational method of transport, as you won’t be able to do it everywhere, but if you need to get downhill fast, it’s the fastest way to go.

You will, of course, need a shield equipped to use this technique. Hold left on the D-pad, then select the shield you want to surf on.

To go downhill fast in TOTK and ride your shield, hold ZL, then press X to jump and A to start shield surfing. If you’re on a hill or on rails, you will then start shield surfing. You will also probably need a good jump up, as the animation may not complete if you immediately press A.

You can even jump and perform tricks in Tears of the Kingdom, which is easiest to do on rails.

There are a couple of things to bear in mind when it comes to riding your shield in TOTK, though. The first is that it will really degrade your shield and ultimately break it, so you’re best off using something that you don’t mind breaking, like a simple Pot Lid. The second thing to remember is that not all shields are good for riding, especially bulkier ones when you’re riding on rails as you will probably just fall off.
