Dogs aren’t quite Link’s best friend in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but if you’re looking for some treasure, they’re friends you’re going to want to make.

Dogs can be found all across Hyrule, but most notably at Stables, which is where you can also register your horses and rest.

To befriend dogs, you’re going to want to feed them. Dogs aren’t particularly picky when it comes to food, as we’ve noticed they tend to eat anything that has a heart icon next to it in your inventory. We tended to give them meat, really just because it’s what they deserve for being good boys.

To feed dogs, press + then press L or R until you get to the Food section. Hold the food in your hand, then back out. Press A to throw the food near a dog, which should then attract them and they will eat it. After they show a hearts “emoji”, they will then either follow you for a brief time or lead you to treasure. If there’s no treasure nearby, they won’t lead you anywhere.

If you’re looking for help with the Misko’s Cave of Chests quest, it seems like there’s a bug currently where the dog just won’t follow you.

Sadly, we also have to inform you that you cannot pet the dogs still. Best game of all time? Maybe not.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available now on Switch.
