Yooka-Laylee Devs Reveal New Publishing Label Playtonic Friends

Put your thumbs up and say it with me: "Playtonic Friends! Awww, friends!"

Playtonic Friends

Playtonic Games are celebrating their sixth birthday, and to ring in this accomplishment, they’ve announced that they’re starting their brand new publishing label, Playtonic Friends, where they’ll work with fellow developers on new and exciting games. You can check out the announcement video at the top of the page, featuring Grant Kirkhope, Steve Mayles and Gavin Price channelling their best Handforth Parish Council Meeting energy.

Is that still a relevant joke? Anyway.

What Is Playtonic Friends?

As mentioned, Playtonic Friends is a new publishing label, allowing the Yooka-Laylee devs to leverage their years of experience in the gaming industry to help some fledging developers looking to make their big break.

In a press release about the announcement, Playtonic CEO Gavin Price shared this: “The knowledge that we were coming up to our sixth birthday triggered lots of typical Teams calls amongst the staff here at Playtonic. Should we all don party hats and video chat together? Should we have a few mocktails, whip out the Karaoke and belt out our best Beyoncé?

He added: “Or should we launch a new publishing label designed to bring the best games from indie studios the world over to market? Given I had a bit of scratchy throat that evening – and that the establishment of Playtonic Friends had been brewing as a serious ambition for a while –  we went with that.”

Who Are Playtonic Friends Working With?

Playtonic Friends has already established a working relationship with three developers: Awe Interactive, Fabraz and okidokico. Awe Interactive are the team responsible for the excellent BPM: Bullets Per Minute, while Fabraz developed the critically acclaimed Slime-san. Lastly, okidokico are a predominantly Android and iOS game developer who’s responsible for the OK Golf series.

Steph Darrah, the Business Development Manager for Playtonic, said this in the same press release: “While everyone at Playtonic has dreams of recreating Scrooge McDuck splashing around in his pool of cold, hard cash, in reality our motivation for setting up Playtonic Friends was to take what we’ve learned about producing & releasing video games and use it to aid developers of a like mind looking for a fruitful route to market. That said, a yacht moored on the shores of Monte Carlo would be nice.”

All three partners of Playtonic Friends will be revealing their brand new projects soon enough, along with Playtonic’s own “top secret” title. It sounds like exciting times are ahead for everyone involved here.
