WWE Is Bringing Back Starrcade

WWE have announced that Starrcade is returning to the Greensboro Coliseum for the first time in three decades.

The famous and vaunted Starrcade brand, once a jewel in the crown of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW), is being resurrected and will take the form of an exclusive, well-stacked live event in Greensboro, North Carolina on Friday, September 29.

Starrcade was first held on Thanksgiving 1983 and the main event that night found Ric Flair defeating Harley Race to win the NWA World Championship; a second world title reign for the man who went on to claim 16 in total.

The event went on to be an unprecedented showcase of talent. Remaining in Greensboro for its first few years, Starrcade became a launching pad for the likes of Dusty Rhodes, The Four Horsemen, Magnum TA, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express and dozens more would-be legends.

The genesis of WCW in the early 1990s saw the fledgling promotion keep the name. Starrcade evolved into an event that captured the very best of the Monday Night Wars.

However, like most things associated with WCW, Starrcade became synonymous with bad booking and fan unrest. The company almost sullied the Starrcade brand for good after the year-long feud between Hollywood Hogan and Sting fizzled out as a result of one of wrestling’s most confusing and anti-climactic matches.

A number of fans will argue that since buying out both WCW and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in 2001, Vince McMahon has failed to capitalise on established events and brands to put on their own marquee.

Since the brace of buyouts at the turn of the century, WWE used the Great American Bash name for a few years before simply calling it The Bash and then finally dropping it. By sitting on events with storied histories such as Starrcade, Superbrawl and Souled Out, the company has potentially neglected a goldmine.

But the return of Starrcade this month could represent a change of tack for WWE, and may open the door toward other nostalgia-reliant money spinners.

The card is always subject to change, but WWE have confirmed a cavalcade of stars old and new for this unique event.

The Hardy Boyz will be the homecoming heroes this time and will rub shoulders with the likes of Ricky Steamboat and the Rock N’ Roll Express. They will also bear witness to what looks like an exciting card. As of yet there is no word as to whether Starrcade 2017 will be broadcast on the WWE Network.

On the off chance you’re reading this, Vince, please do!
