What Else Is There To Watch Over WrestleMania Weekend?

Don't have twelve hours to burn on WrestleMania this year? We got you.

G1 Supercard

WrestleMania week has become more than just WWE’s biggest spectacle, it’s evolved into a festival of sorts, bringing together the best and brightest brands of Professional Wrestling from all over the globe in support of the bonanza. It has gotten to a point where there is literally too much wrestling for fans to pick and choose, everyone who is anyone is now running a show in New York next week. But fret not my dear indie-goers, we’ve got you.

We’ve narrowed down a list of the five hottest independent shows that are in the area for WrestleMania weekend. So whether you’re one of the lucky thousands who are travelling to the Big Apple next week, or those like me who are sat at home doing a celebratory binge, here are five shows that you should definitely check out.

5. Kaiju Big Battel – La Boom, Queens | April 4th

The scourge of villainous humans, evil aliens and colossal monsters are set to collide with the bold and the heroic over WrestleMania weekend. Kaiju Big Battel brings together everything you could possibly love about campy cartoons and Pro Wrestling.

KBB has become somewhat of a cult favourite amongst wrestling fans, who are slowly losing their grasp on sensible booking decisions and drifting towards the outrageous nature of Silver Potato facing down Dr. Cube’s Posse.

Watching Kaiju do battle should be a welcome break from the intensity of WWE, and quite the start to your WrestleMania weekend. It’s a late one, but definitely something I’d recommend checking out.

4. Joey Janela’s Spring Break 3 | April 5th

The Bad Boy has really filed out a niche of his own with the Spring Break series. Bringing together the hottest and strangest names from all of professional wrestling, Janela’s Spring Break hits WrestleMania weekend and promises another one of those shows that makes you stop and wonder what could be better than this sport.

The card already boasts Japanese Deathmatch icon Atsushi Onita due to overwhelming demand. Who else could possibly show up? GCW and Janela have booked some big names for these shows in the past: Matt Riddle, Walter and even James Ellsworth have all gone all out for Spring Break. So expect big things from the Bad Boy for this highly demanded, sold-out show.

3. Revolution Pro Wrestling at WrestleCon | April 5th

Slightly biased here, but Rev Pro is a brand that nobody should sleep on. The amalgamation of BritWres and New Japan Pro Wrestling has become the biggest British product to hit the overseas market, and for the second year running, they are hosting a show during WrestleMania week.

Headlined by a huge tag match between Will Ospreay & Hiromu Takahashi and Suzuki-Gun, this show is going to be stacked from top to bottom. Fans of Strong Style wrestling will feel right at home, expect some top-quality wrestling mixed with some top-quality banter to keep you smiling.

The full card is yet to be revealed, but some big names are being thrown into the mix, RPW mainstays such as David Starr, Tomohiro Ishii and Aussie Open will all be in action, along with a some debuting faces like Ryusuke Taguchi.

Although that’s not all from WrestleCon.

2. Joey Ryan Penis Party | April 5th

Joey Ryan is going to kill the business and by god I love him for it. The first ever Penis Party is taking place at WrestleCon straight after the lights fade on Revolution Pro’s big show. So for those who were sick to death of meaty bois forearming each other, fear not because the King of Dong Style has 10 matches packed full of innuendo and sleaze.

Ryan’s put together some big headliners for his first show, The Lucha Bros, Fenix and Pentagon Jr. will be teaming against Johnny Mundo/Impact/Blackcraft and Taya Valkyrie. Supporting the Lucha Underground stars are Tommy Dreamer, Colt Cabana and Scarlett Bourdeaux, so expect shenanigans from start to finish.

The event name alone is enough to suggest that this is going to be a very special show to compliment WrestleMania. Whether you’re a fan of Joey Ryan or not, you can’t deny that this is going to be a ton of fun, so do yourself a favour and join the Penis Party.

1. G1 Supercard at MSG | April 6th

Of course the #1 spot on this list goes to the joint spectacle of ROH and NJPW. Madison Square Garden is the venue to host pro wrestling in, it’s WWE’s home turf and the arena all fans want to find themselves in one day. ROH and NJPW are certifiably the biggest opposition to WWE at this moment, will they topple WrestleMania? Of course not, but this is the perfect opportunity for them to appeal to the wider audience and give exposure to their biggest stars.

In a recent article we reported that the main event will be for the IWGP Championship, ‘Switchblade’ Jay White defending against the winner of the New Japan Cup, Kazuchika Okada. On paper, this is a huge main event that no wrestling fan should miss. After a series of losses, Okada is looking for redemption and his next IWGP title reign. ROH are also putting together some huge championship main events, namely a three-way ladder match for the ROH title between Jay Lethal, Marty Scurll and Matt Taven, which promises to be a show-stopper.

I’m willing to hazard a guess that this show will steal the entire weekend. Fans of the little guy should definitely take the time to check out this card from top to bottom, if Naito/Ibushi, Ospreay/Cobb and ZSJ/Tanahashi doesn’t tickle your fancy then you’re doing something wrong.
