Does every half decent movie franchise need a TV spin-off to massage its own ego these days? Hot off the news that his Fast & Furious franchise is getting prequels and off-shoots, Vin Diesel has now revealed that his Riddick series is getting another sequel and a TV show.
The film, to be titled Furia, will be produced by Diesel’s company, One Race Films. A script by director David Twohy, helmer of all three previous films, will soon be in the works. Exactly what Furia will be about is uncertain, but within the world of Riddick, Furyans are a special race of humans. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they featured heavily given the name.
What about the TV show, you ask? No details about when or where we’ll be getting it, but we do know it will be called Merc City. Anyone who’s seen the Riddick movies will know how big a part the mercenaries play within the franchise’s universe. There’s something of a Firefly vibe to the whole thing that could make a show about the Riddickverse mercenaries rather fun.
Which begs the question: why don’t they just give us more Firefly? It’s a definitive trend that more and more movie series are entering the television space. Whether it’s movies trying to expand their output or TV struggling financially that’s fuelling this tendency is harder to determine.
Either way, mark an unspecified date in your diary for these two projects. Don’t expect this to be the last movie franchise that makes this move either. If we don’t get at least a couple more of these announcements before Christmas, it would be a massive surprise.
