UFC 4’s Box Art Sure Is Something (And Also Cursed)

Puts the graphic in graphic design.

With the recent announcement that UFC 4 would release this announcement, we also got our first look at the box art for the game. It’s about as pretty as Brock Lesnar halfway through a sweating session, let’s just say that.

Here’s the reveal trailer:

And the synopsis:

“In EA SPORTS™ UFC 4, the fighter you become is shaped by your fight style, your achievements, and your personality. Go from unknown amateur to UFC superstar in the new Career Mode, experience the origins of combat sports in two all-new environments, or challenge the world in new Blitz Battles or Online World Championships to become the undisputed champ. All of your fights will now feel more authentic with fluid clinch-to-strike combinations that offer more responsive stand-up gameplay, and overhauled takedown and ground mechanics to deliver more control in those key phases of the fight.”

Jorge Masvidal and Israel Adesanya share cover duties for the sequel to 2018’s UFC 3, which received mostly positive reviews with criticisms coming for its grappling and submission system. The first criticism of UFC 4 has to be this cover art, though.

It’s hard to figure out the thinking behind this art. Not only is it a sensory overload with so many different colours, slogans and a mish-mash of images, but the centerpiece is truly odd with Masvidal and Adesanya looking like they’re gearing up for a night out. It doesn’t really sell the brutalism of MMA at all — it’s like having a Need For Speed game that is just a shot of a glove department filled with old CDs and half-eaten chewing gum.

It also already seems to be a bit of a curse that follows EA Sports cover stars. Conor McGregor adorned the front of UFC 3 while at the top of his game, the cover curse struck him not long after with a loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. Almost immediately after the cover for UFC 4 was revealed, Jorge Masvidal lost to Kamaru Usman at UFC 251.

UFC 4 launches August 14th for PS4 and Xbox One with Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury available to those who pre-order. There’s still time for them to change the cover, then.
