Ubisoft CEO Reckons New Consoles Will Launch In A “Minimum Of 2 Years”

Ubisoft

The Xbox One X launched the other day, being touted as the most powerful console ever made. If Yves Guillemot is to be believed, that claim won’t be disputed for a while yet.

In a call to investors, which was reported on by Gamespot, the CEO of Ubisoft made clear his belief that the next generation of consoles won’t see the light of day for at least 2 years.

“As Sony launched PlayStation 4 Pro last year and Microsoft Xbox One X this year, we think we still have a minimum of two years in front of us before something new is coming,” Guillemot said. “But that’s our perception, we don’t have any confidential information on that front.”

As far as speculation goes, Yves Guillemot is probably on to something. It would be foolish for Microsoft to launch a new console so quickly after the Xbox One X. Imagine the fan backlash from Xbox One X owners when a new, more powerful console is revealed after they’ve shelled out £449/$499 for “the most powerful console”.

The ball is in PlayStation’s court. The launch of the Xbox One X means that Sony’s machines are objectively behind in terms of technology, so it’s all eyes on them to bring forth new hardware. But doing so quickly would mean less in terms of how powerful the console would be. Essentially, Sony would be better off waiting for the technology to evolve further before cashing in on a new console.

Of course, this is all conjecture on the behalf of us and Yves Guillemot. There’s nothing to stop Sony from hosting the PlayStation Experience event next month, announcing a new console, and simply waiting for the pre-orders to roll in.
