Transformers: The Last Knight Tanks at U.S. Box Office, But this is Far from the End

The New York Times reports that Transformers: The Last Knight  only took in 45.5 million dollars, a paltry portion of the film’s reported $217 million dollar budget. But don’t worry! We’ll still get another Transformers movie every few years or so until we’re all dead.

That’s because, as Variety reports, China brought in $192.6 million in its opening week alone, bringing the worldwide total to $265 million. According to the Times, the movie’s total budget including promotion came to $350 million. So it will certainly turn a profit.

This is the way mainstream Hollywood films are going to go for the conceivable future: action-dominated movies that transcend language barriers catered to the several billion people in China and India.

Well, I say so be it. The multiplexes are full of screaming kids anyway. Now’s as good time as any to catch a good indie flick at home.
