Tom Holland’s Thoughts Are on Display in New Sci-Fi Film Chaos Walking

For a film that was pronounced "unreleasable", the trailer looks kind of...good?

Lionsgate just released the official trailer for Chaos Walking (after teasing us about it for the whole week), which stars Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley and Mads Mikkelsen.

What’s It About?

In this dystopian world, Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) discovers Viola (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious girl who crash lands on his planet, where all the women have disappeared and the men are afflicted by “the Noise” – a force that puts all their thoughts on display. It becomes increasingly clear that a setting like this is dangerous for Viola, and when her life becomes threatened, Todd steps up to protect her, discovering his own inner power in the process.

Chaotic History

The road to Chaos Walking being made was a chaotic (pun intended) and volatile one. The film is an adaptation of Patrick Ness’ The Knife of Never Letting Go. In 2013, Robert Zemeckis was set to direct, based on a script from Charlie Kaufman that he liked (this was the first draft, the current screenplay is by Patrick Ness and Christopher Ford).

But nothing was done until director Doug Liman stepped in to make the movie in 2016. Production began in 2017 and Lionsgate set a March 1, 2019 release date, but this was changed when major reshoots had to occur in 2018. In 2019, it was determined that more reshoots were necessary to salvage the movie (which was deemed “unreleasable” by Lionsgate executives).

The last movie that endured such chaos before its release was The New Mutants, and we all know how that turned out. Let’s hope Chaos Walking is a different fish altogether.
