Stare into the adolescent face of your new friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, folks.
For weeks now the faceless, globular masses of Marvel and Sony have been making rumbling noises about the next actor to take on the iconic role. But now the two giant blobs have finally spat out a name.
And that name is Tom Holland.
No, me neither. But the guy’s Wikipedia page is sure going to get a few hits in the next day or two.
So, Tom Holland is a British actor who is most famous for his performance as Billy Elliot on London’s West End. More recently, he’s appeared in the UK series Wolf Hall and a Canadian horror flick called Backcountry. Not exactly the most seasoned resume.
It had been rumoured for the past few weeks that the casting had come down to Holland and fellow Brit Charlie Rowe. Other actors rumoured to have been considered include Logan Lerman (the Percy Jackson series) and Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead).
Sony and Marvel inked a deal earlier this year to bring Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The announcement comes after a tough week for Sony and Marvel on the Spider-Man front. A leaked memo, purportedly outlining criteria for the next incarnation of the webslinger, recently surfaced online, causing a stir.
Given that we’re getting Ant-Man in a few weeks though, this announcement probably isn’t a surprise. The Marvel Hype Machine has practically become self-aware at this point.
Holland will appear alongside just about every other marvel movie hero in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. Seriously, that film’s got so many Avengers in it that I’m starting to worry if there’ll be any room left for Cap himself.
