The Trailer For A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood Makes Us Want To Be Kind To Our Neighbors

"I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you."

A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood

Sony Pictures Entertainment has just released the trailer for A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, leaving us all in awe of how perfect Tom Hanks is in the role of Mister Rogers. This is not a biopic per se; it revolves around a journalist Lloyld Vogel, played by Matthew Rhys, tasked to write an article about the beloved children’s entertainer. Vogel’s character is based off journalist Tom Junod, who was Rogers’ friend in real life. As Vogel interacts with Mister Rogers, he finds his cynicism and skepticism melting away as he learns about kindness and decency from Rogers.

The movie is directed by Marielle Heller, the same director of Lee Israel biopic (of sorts) Can You Ever Forgive Me?. It’s quite a turn to go from someone as cynical and isolated as Israel to an empathetic person like Fred Rogers, but Heller has shown remarkable filmmaking in being able to show you the essence of these characters. From this short trailer we can see she has managed to capture on screen who Fred Rogers was. Of course it helps that the nicest man in Hollywood is playing the role of Mister Rogers; can’t imagine anyone else doing the role justice.

It seems Fred Rogers has been on our minds of late, seeing as how the documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? was released last year. Maybe we’re looking to inject a little more kindness into the world – let’s hope this movie inspires that.

A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood will be in theatres November 22nd, 2019.
