The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power had big shoes to fill as a prequel to The Lord of the Rings. Amazon’s original series finally had viewers re-experience Middle-earth by showing its origins and character backstories a thousand years before Tolkien’s trilogy. While the show was met with somewhat mixed reviews (especially compared to the universally beloved movies), Amazon has already greenlit a second season for The Rings of Power.
In fact, Rings of Power was renewed in 2019 before its premiere on Prime Video. So whether you like it or not, we’ll continue to see what the showrunners have in store for us in the Second Age of Middle-earth. Buckle up as we tackle what you should know about Rings of Power: Season 2.
When Is Rings of Power: Season 2 Coming Out?
Despite being renewed a while back, Amazon hasn’t announced Rings of Power: Season 2’s release date. However, it’s already confirmed that Season 2 has finished filming and is currently undergoing post-production. Unlike other shows, Rings of Power wrapped up production before the Actors Guild strike, so it wasn’t affected as much.
Regarding a specific release date, the head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, told Variety they aim to get it out to the world as soon as possible. “We want the shortest time possible between seasons, but we want to keep the bar just as high. So it’ll take what it takes,” she said.
Head of Television at Amazon, Vernon Sanders, also mentioned a similar statement in an interview with Collider. “It would be amazing if we could get Season 2 out within a year of Season 1’s release. It may take a smidge longer than that, but we’re doing everything we can, and we’re going to get better and faster as we go,” Sanders stated.
Since no one wants to rush the process, you can expect Rings of Power: Season 2 to be released around 2024 at the earliest.
What Is Rings of Power: Season 2 About?
While its plot isn’t confirmed, there’s plenty to unpack in Rings of Power: Season 2. They may have Galadriel deal with the aftermath of Halbrand revealing his true identity as Sauron. With Sauron’s identity revealed, we’ll likely see him rise to power and take control of the orcs of Mordor. There’s even a rumor that a massive two-episode battle will happen in Season 2, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed.
On the other hand, after the three elven rings were forged in the season finale, we’ve yet to see the other rings for men, dwarves, and the One Ring get made. Since mithril is a crucial component, we could witness some characters encounter the monstrous Balrog in the Dwarven mines of Khazad-dûm in the next season.
Meanwhile, Nori and the Stranger will journey to the lands of Rhûn to uncover more about the latter, with many people believing that the Stranger is actually Gandalf.
