The Half Of It is Netflix’s Latest Teen Flick

You know you can count on Netflix for quality teen content - well, sometimes.

Netflix just released the trailer for their latest teen flick The Half Of It, which follows protagonist Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis), who sells essays for cash. She meets school jock Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer), who has a different request. You see, he is in love with Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire), and is enlisting her to help him write a love letter for her. A little complication arises, being that Ellie starts liking Aster too, and Paul is like the first friend she has, so this could jeopardize their relationship as well.

While it does seem that most of the plot is in the trailer, I don’t think it really matters since The Half Of It is playing in the big leagues of the teen experience. The film allows us to step into the perspective of an Asian American teen, dealing with the struggles of that as well as navigating the choppy waters of one’s sexuality. It is one of the movies on my list of 10 Netflix Original Movies to watch in 2020, so I have been looking forward to its release.

Director Alice Wu’s (she is also the writer for this film) previous film Saving Face was 16 years ago, though the themes both movies tackle (dealing with one’s sexuality when part of a more conservative culture) seem fairly similar, so you might want to check that movie out while waiting for The Half of It to make its debut.

The Half Of It is released on Netflix May 1, 2020.
