Teaser Trailer for Jane Austen’s Emma Looks Sprightly and Fun

I will never say no to watching a Jane Austen adaptation.

Emma

Focus Pictures just released the teaser trailer for Emma, starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the titular role. Taylor-Joy has proven to be a force to be reckoned with, delivering strong performances in movies like The Witch, Thoroughbreds, Split and has even gone on to be part of the world of Peaky Blinders in this latest season. She is captivating to watch on screen, so I am certainly looking forward to seeing her interpretation of the character Emma.

Out of all Jane Austen’s female protagonists, Emma is a little harder to pin down. Lizzy of Pride and Prejudice is vivacious and witty, Northanger Abbey’s Catherine is curious and imaginative, which are more straightforward to portray on screen. Emma is well meaning, but sometimes very oblivious to things beyond her own perspective, which is why Knightley is the perfect counterpart for her.

The colour palette of the film, from what is seen in the trailer, is gorgeous and suits the society of the novel. Emma is one of the more fun novels of Austen, and it will be quite a treat to have Bill Nighy in the role of Emma’s father poking fun at the townspeople. Other members of the cast include Mia Goth, Miranda Hart, Josh O’Connor, Callum Turner, Rupert Graves, Gemma Whelan, Amber Anderson, Tanya Reynolds, and Connor Swindells.

Emma will spring into theatres February 21, 2020.
