Star Fox 2 Programmer Overjoyed At Its SNES Classic Edition Inclusion

The announcement that the previously unreleased Star Fox 2 would be included in the Super NES Classic Edition came as a shock to everyone, not least to the creators, who were apparently not informed in advance.

Programmer Dylan Cuthbert shared an image on Twitter of himself and several other members of the development team sharing a long overdue celebration dinner.

Cuthbert has retained close ties with the franchise, as he went on to direct 2006’s Star Fox: Command. Speaking to Games Industry.biz, he was clearly elated to hear that Star Fox 2 will finally be released, saying:

“I got to have a big awesome surprise like everyone else so I’m quite happy about that…It’s an absolutely awesome feeling. Incredible really.”

Star Fox 2 was completed all the way back in 1995, but its release was ultimately cancelled. The main reason for this is often said to be that, because the release of the N64 was right around the corner, Nintendo felt that having a 3D Super Nintendo Entertainment System game hitting stores at a time when they faced strict competition in the form of more powerful systems such as the PS1 and the Sega Saturn would not have reflected well.

Be that as it may, fans were still left bitterly disappointed by the cancellation, so they should be rejoicing over the news that they are finally going to be able to play Star Fox 2 when the SNES Classic hits stores on September 29. Nintendo have also confirmed that they will be producing the system in larger quantities than its predecessor, so you have to fight tooth and nail to get hold of a SNES Classic like most people had to do for the original NES version.
