Square Enix: Dragon Quest XI S On PS4 “Not Possible” To Offer As An Upgrade To Original Owners

PS4 owners will have to pay full price and basically buy the game again.

As recently announced at the Xbox Games Showcase, Dragon Quest XI S will be coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC this December following a period of exclusivity on the Switch.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition, to give it its full name, will feature new stories, a special 2D mode, and additional content alongside tweaks.

If you already own Dragon Quest XI on PS4, though, you won’t be able to upgrade or update to S — it will instead be an entirely separate purchase. This means that you will have to buy the whole game again, rather than updating to S with a patch or paying for the extra additions that come with the Definitive Edition.

This news comes from Square Enix themselves, who we questioned about a potential upgrade following the reveal:

“Unfortunately, there is no option to upgrade to Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of An Elusive Age – Definitive Edition. In addition to the 2D mode as well as a host of other content for players to enjoy, the Definitive Edition uses save data and a version of Unreal Engine different to that of the original. Therefore, it was not possible to implement an upgrade system. For these reasons, it was developed as a separate game.”

While this obviously isn’t great, it’s made somewhat worse by the fact that Dragon Quest XI S on PS4 will actually be a port of the Switch version, meaning that it will have a graphical downgrade. It will still offer similar resolutions and framerate to the original on PS4, though it’s hard to say that it will be “definitive” if it isn’t the best looking version of the game.

Still, this PS4 update will feature some quality of life improvements and additional content, as well as a lower price point than the standard game with it costing £34.99/$39.99, so that may be a concession some fans are willing to make.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition launches December 4th on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
