According to Collider, Sony has gotten scriptwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to write for a Madame Web movie set in the Spider-Man universe. Sony executive Palak Patel will oversee the project on behalf of the studio, however, Sony has declined to further comment on the project.

In the comics, Madame Webb is usually a blind, elderly woman with a chronic neuromuscular disease, which makes it difficult for her to move and breathe. Therefore, she needs to be connected to a special life support system to function, which looks like a spider web. She has clairvoyant abilities and is likened to The Matrix’s Oracle in terms of power and position.

Sazama and Sharpless are also the writers for Sony’s Morbius, about a man who tries to cure his rare blood disorder with vampire-bat DNA, but finds himself becoming a vampire instead. The movie has Jared Leto in the leading role, with a July 2020 release date.

With Marvel out of the picture, it seems that Sony is expanding the Spider-Man universe first before circling back to fitting him into the whole scheme of things. A Venom sequel is in the works, with Andy Serkis directing and Tom Hardy set to return in the titular role, and given the intrinsic link the two share in the comics, this movie might be the way to bring Spider-Man back into the fold.
