Sonic 2 HD Is A Thing And It Is Glorious

Sonic 2 HD

Fans of the old school Sonic can rejoice as a long-term, non-profit fan project could be about to see the light of day.

The game is currently in a 2.0 form, having been in development for a couple of years and the trailers mentions that a new demo will be rolled out at the end of this month.

In the words used in the new trailer, the game has been “reimagined and expanded”.

Unlike many HD projects that often use high end graphical effects to dazzle gamers, the remake retains the original style but bumps up the animation in a way that makes it look like a watercolour cartoon, rather than something that has been over-engineered.

Maybe more than anything else, I love that the team have added small facial animation details that really bring Sonic and Tails to life. These effects are cute little moments that include landing details such as Tails having a wide smile and holding his arms out wide as he prepares to land for a jump, or other details such as crying.

Equally, the trailer mentions that an “all-new remastered soundtrack” will be included.

Sonic 2 HD looks like a cracking little project that highlights some serious hard graft by the guys behind it. I look forward to playing it when it eventually comes out.
