Single of the Week: Verb T & Pitch 92 – Getaway Car

I probably wasn’t the only person who almost peed themselves with excitement when word came through that Verb T – High Focus mainstay and one of UK hip-hop’s heroes – was going to collaborate with The Mouse Outfit on their second album, Step Steadier. When the album dropped, Verb T’s tracks were some of the standouts, particularly the hypnotic ‘Credits Roll’. Now it seems that his work with Manchester’s foremost live hip-hop band has given way to a new collaboration, as Verbs and Pitch 92 have come together to make an album of their own.

Pitch 92 has presided over the development of the Mouse Outfit sound since the beginning, and he’s a dominant force in the Manchester scene even beyond that. He’s also shared a stage with the likes of The Pharcyde and De La Soul. Anything that brings together sounds from Manchester and London is a welcome addition to the scene but to have these two coming together goes beyond that. The album, Good Evening, is due out on the 6th of October, and we’ve already had a couple of tunes to whet our appetite, most recently ‘Getaway Car’:

Verbs’ bars sit very comfortably in his wheelhouse on this one, rising and rolling over before hitting you with a quick pause or emphasised line just when you get comfortable. He’s a rapper that understands melody better than most and against the rippling, almost xylophone-like sample Pitch 92 uses here, it’s a great fit which certainly bodes well for the full release. The album is set to feature a blend of Northern and Southern voices including DRS, Fliptrix, BVA, Jehst, Sparkz and Ocean Wisdom. Be sure to keep an eye out for it in October, and expect further coverage here in the run up to release.
