Single of the Week: Quiet as a Mouse – ‘British Flag’

Quiet as a Mouse

It’s here. The moment you’ve all been waiting. The reason why you dossed off work today to make sure you didn’t miss out. Single of the Week this time out goes to the poignant British Flag by the up and coming Quiet as a Mouse.

My ears are very keen on this to say the least, though I have always had a bit of a penchant for the miserable so let’s be clear from the off: this is no Ariana Grande. Though you may have already guessed that from the band photo above…

By hitting like a back of the hand straight to the cheek, British Flag makes short work of conveying a feeling of a lost love and its gothic tone is a refreshing one, engineered masterfully by Liam Watson (The White Stripes’ ‘Elephant’) and mastered by Noel Summerville (known for his work with The Clash).

It might be a weird sentiment to think of gothic music as a breath of fresh air but these immensely talented Scots give some CPR to a flatlining indie scene in just over three minutes. Not a statement you can make lightly.

Alex Moran’s vocals are a satisfying mix of Ian Curtis and Scott Hutchinson, satisfying enough that you should be checking out Quiet as a Mouse’s earlier work ahead of the release of the British Flag EP on the 11th of August.
