If you’re a regular reader of Cultured Vultures, and follow our irregular new music feature Pulse, you may well be more than familiar with Post War Glamour Girls; they found their way into a previous edition and left quite a lasting impression. If not, no harm, no foul, you get the extra special treat of experiencing them for the first time with the first taste of their up and coming second album, Feeling Strange, and our latest Single of the Week, ‘Felonious Punk’.
The four-piece from Leeds, who were originally all drummers, have been on a relentless touring schedule since releasing their debut album, Pink Fur, last year, and it’s clear to hear from ‘Felonious Punk’ that that time has seen the band stretch themselves out to their limits to see what fits; their latest single reveals an even leaner and meaner band than that which was already on show.
This newer sound doesn’t just fit better, though, it’s positively figure hugging. Having already displayed a penchant for a good strut and groove previously, ‘Felonious Punk’ finds the foursome embracing it fully; the, still, ominous atmospheres of their sound now finds a distinctly funk-addled swagger at its core, spinning on a ferocious groove. The angles and aggression are still present, the vocals are still as unhinged (manic preacher to bellowing goth croon and back again), but the band feel more comfortable in their own skin, confident, sexy.
The band may have been working hard on tour, but I get the distinct impression there was plenty of time they may well have been hardly working, if you catch my drift. Either way, if ‘Felonious Punk’ is anything to go by, then, in relation to Feeling Strange, something wicked this way comes.
