Single of the Week: Owl John – ‘Hate Music’

Owl John

As a perennial fanboy of Frightened Rabbit, this was never not going to be my pick for Cultured Vultures’ Single of the Week, though even the impartial may be inclined to stomp their foot as soon as it kicks in.

Owl John is the side-project of the immensely talented Scott Hutchinson and is another bow in the cap of one of the truly great songwriters of this generation. Widespread comparisons to Morrissey (thankfully minus the ego) have been merited with each release that Hutchinson has been a part of.

Proving that he doesn’t want to play it safe with the same old story, the tempo is slowed right down for Owl John’s latest release ‘Hate Music‘ and it broods its way gleefully into your subconscious within its short three minute length.

Hutchinson’s haunting and at times vulnerable voice hold together a thudding, saloon-style bass and a guitar so distorted that it could dissolve jelly from a mile away on the promising new single. Fans of Frightened Rabbit’s newest work may find it hard to be enthused if they’ve become used to Hutchinson from the arena-ready Pedestrian Verse but this is a raw, vicious track that’s more Sing the Greys than anything.
