Single of the Week: Loren Kate – ‘When You Leave’

If you’re reading this Monday – as I imagine you all are, because obviously Cultured Vultures Single of the Week is always your first priority when starting a new week – I can only apologise, because I’m not going to help you with those Monday blues this time around. Our Single of the Week this week, ‘When You Leave’ by Loren Kate, is an emotional one, and it’s going to tug on those already tender heartstrings of yours. I’m sorry, I really am.

Except that I’m not, because whilst ‘When You Leave’ is a tearjerker, it’s also a delightful piece of folk influenced pop, with a touch of ‘Australiana’ about it – like Americana but Australian. Whilst it may lead you to informing co-workers or fellow commuters that you’ve just got something in your eye, it’s romantic poignancy, and general twee sweetness, will give you a nice warm and fuzzy sensation right in the feels.

The song itself is the lead-off single from Loren Kate’s upcoming new EP, Til Night Meets The Sun, set for release October 9th, and is also a very personal one for Kate, dealing as it does with the death of her former partner two years ago. The song’s lyrics address him directly, and perhaps most heartbreakingly through the line ‘take my love, take it all, cause I’ve got time to make some more’. As Kate has said herself;

“I wrote this song for my ex-partner who passed away a few years ago. He was a dear friend and a big teacher in my life. On the way to the hospital to say my last goodbye, this song started writing itself. I was trying to find the words to say, but what can you say to someone who’s about to pass away? I just wanted him to feel my love, and take it with him.”

It’s a sad one this week, but there’s a level of acceptance and sincerity to the lyrics and the music that steers ‘When You Love’ more towards its original intention as a comforting expression of love, than it does an overwhelming sense of loss. Plus, it’s hand-drawn, stick-figure video is exceedingly lovely. Right in the feels.
