Single of the Week: Little Dragon – Sweet

Little Dragon have had a fascinating career thus far. This time 10 years ago, they were just getting to work on their debut, self-titled album and now they’re ready to bring out their fifth. Little Dragon felt experimental and multi-faceted, but overall it felt like an RnB record, while the follow up, Machine Dreams, saw them flirting with synth-led 80s funk. It was with Ritual Union and the Grammy nominated Nabuma Rubberband that the Swedish group found their signature sound, making this next album all the more significant.

We’ve now heard two tracks from the upcoming album – ‘High’ and ‘Sweet’. ‘Sweet’ is most definitely a Little Dragon track, but it feels darker than some of their more recent material. It’s glitchy, stripped down and frenetic. The video, meanwhile, is just about the most bizarre Little Dragon music video to date, and that’s saying something.

It shows the band wandering around their home town of Gotenburg, consorting with some kind of weird tree witch, gazing at UFOs and just dancing around in outlandish costumes, likely designed by the band’s lead singer, Yukimi Nagano, who has presided over the look of the band. The video was directed by Ossian Melin, who also directed the video for ‘High’ and has worked with another of other Swedish bands, like Lo-Fi Fnk and Mando Diao.

Season High comes out on April 14th.
