The days are getting shorter, and what’s left of them are getting colder. Yes, autumn is well and truly in full swing, tree stripping its way toward winter, weather worsening all the while. Doesn’t it all just scream tropical grooves, sunshine melodies, blissful harmonies, and beachside funk? Whilst that is of course a rhetorical question, it does have an actual answer, and of course that answer is yes.
I mean, what better way is there to warm your heart when winter comes rolling around with all its weather in tow than with music that is wholly inappropriate for that setting? More layers, sure. But just stop being a smart arse for a moment, and begin warming that shrivelled blood pump of yours with your Single of the Week; ‘Boogie Waltzer’ by way of Habitats, an indie pop slash self described ‘tropical groove’ outfit.
The four-piece hail from Hampshire, and have spent 2015 riding on the rhythms of their debut EP ‘Diamond Days’ since its arrival back in February. With 2016 on its way, and with it Habitats’ follow-up EP ‘Jungles’, the band have released the first taste of that release by way of their latest and our single of the week. The track itself announces itself on a strutting, funk-driven, bass riff, naturalistic dance rhythms, classic guitar pop licks, vibrant indie hooks, and infectious vocal harmonies.
It’s a summer song through and through, and that’s why it’s perfect for pulling you out of that inevitable seasonally affected depression you are about to sink into like quicksand. It will solidify that sand up something fierce, pull the ocean up close, pop up some palm trees, and paint the sky a nice blend of oranges and purples. Lovely jubbly.
