Single of the Week: Bear’s Den – ‘Think of England’

think of england

I know, I know. It’s Wednesday, there hasn’t been a SINGLE OF THE WEEK, and you haven’t had a clue which new single you were supposed to be listening to and letting it wiggle its wormy way into your brain soil and take up residence. I’m sorry, I truly am, but you’ll forgive me surely as I feed this particular worm through your ear canal. So, just lay back and ‘Think of England’.

Now, speaking as Welshman, I don’t think I’ve ever laid back and thought of England – because obviously I’d be laying back and thinking of sheep. However, Bear’s Den do seem to put forth a pretty solid case for one, perhaps, considering it with their latest single, ‘Think of England’ – the most recent taste of last year’s debut album, Islands.

The three-piece from London, comprising Andrew Davie, Kev Jones, and Joey Haynes, have very quickly gathered themselves quite a following, and garnered themselves considerable attention in the music press, with their own slant on alternative folk. Taking a pretty minimalist approach to their music the band instead fill spaces with the emotion of their song-writing, creating an especially atmospheric but seductive sound.

The band are heading out on the road at the moment, with a big tour of Europe, so if you weren’t already familiar, now would be the ideal to get yourselves acquainted. Start with the single, work your way back to the album, then work your way forward to seeing them live, because you know want to let those smooth vocals, sparsely melodic guitars, tribal-meets-gospel drums, and heartfelt melodies wash over you in person.
