SINGLE REVIEW: MAYA – ‘Sinners’

Maya Sinners music video

The opening seconds of this track give little away very little. It’s only when MAYA’s vocals burst in that you realise this song is something to shout about.

Maya Weiss released her debut single, with an accompanying video, earlier this month. Written with Smash Bros (Cheryl Cole, Cee Lo green, Flo Rida) and singer/songwriter Shelley Segal (Carl Cox, Adam Levy, Josh Abrahams), ‘Sinners’ is a track that looks at two sides of relationship. The video reflects this, showing MAYA as both devil and angel, but I’d like to have seen something a bit deeper from it. It feels a bit like a Year 6 drama group designed the video.

MAYA’s soulful voice commands attention. Bold and powerful, it booms over the slick instrumental and grabs your focus, if you want it to or not. She’s powerful and she knows it. This confidence makes the song even stronger. The chorus hooks that begin as earworms do slip to feel repetitive, but it’s commercially strong nonetheless for its catchiness. It’s instantly appealing, and whether you like it or not, it’s bound to be stuck in your head.

MAYA really shows potential here, and I want to hear more from her. Her voice would be perfect for a personal, soulful ballad. Whilst charming, this song ultimately feels a little manufactured. Though brilliant, it lacks some of the personal warmth I believe she’d be capable of.
