Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 Confirmed As A Remake, Not Remaster

Shadow of the Colossus PS4 Remaster

Looking like a million bucks at Sony’s E3 2017 conference, Shadow of the Colossus quietly stole the show. Not because it looked like a slight update, but because the visuals were drastically different, leading some to argue over it being a remaster or remake. Myself and Tom Roberts thought it was another remaster to follow up on the one already released for PS3.

What fools we were.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida was speaking to Japanese gaming publication Famitsu (which has been kindly translated by Siliconera) and revealed that Bluepoint Games’ modern reimagining is in fact a remake.

“It is a remake. The game content is the same as the original version, but all the assets are being remade. I figured we could use such tech to make if we’re going to make Shadow of the Colossus in the PS4 era. Bluepoint is the development company behind the PS3 remaster versions of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. So we know them rather well.”

As Tom lamented, Shadow of the Colossus’ antiquated mechanics and controls still have their charm, but it looks like they’re striving for the best of both worlds.

“It’s the same, but player preferences for controls and such change over time, so we’re working on implementing a more modernized way to play. And of course you can play with a feel of the original version, but what we’re doing is showing how great the original work is, using today’s technology.”

With the egg sqaurely on our faces, let’s look forward to Shadow of the Colossus’s PS4 remake sometime in 2018. Check out the trailer and a few screenshots for it below.
