Second Official Trailer For Sam Mendes’ 1917 Puts Roger Deakins In Oscar Spotlight

Two official trailers? Keep feeding us Universal.

Universal Pictures just released another official trailer for Sam Mendes’ 1917, and it’s all about cinematographer Roger Deakins in this one. From the trailer itself, what Deakins has achieved with the lighting is impressive, with darker underground bunker shots to more open spaces in broad daylight, especially when you consider that the entire film is delivered in one single-take.

Sam Mendes recently spoke to Vanity Fair about his decision to deliver the film in such a manner. He “wanted to travel every step with these men — to breathe every breath with them. It needed to be visceral and immersive. What they are asked to do is almost impossibly difficult. The way the movie is made is designed to bring you as close as possible to that experience.” Mendes and Deakins have collaborated on films before, films such as Skyfall, Jarhead and Revolutionary Road, with the latter being a strong Oscar contender.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Birdman also employed this single-take illusion, which won Emmanuel Lubezki the Oscar for Best Cinematography. So if Deakins can deliver on this front, he may very well be walking away with his second Academy Award. He won his first Oscar for Bladerunner 2049 in 2018, which many felt was long overdue.

1917 will have a domestic limited release on December 25, 2019, and an international release on January 10, 2020.
