Scott Derrickson Returning To Direct Doctor Strange Sequel

Although it's still a long way off.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Scott Derrickson, who directed the first Doctor Strange movie, has ‘quietly finalized’ a deal to return to direct the sequel. Although the film does not yet have a writer attached, sources have apparently informed THR that the script will be completed next year, with filming set to begin in 2020. A release date has not been confirmed, but May 2021 is looking likely.

Benedict Cumberbatch will return as the Sorcerer Supreme, despite the fact that he turned to dust at the end of Infinity War. Benedict Wong will also reprise his role as Wong, with Rachel McAdams, who starred as Dr. Christine Palmer, also expected to return.

Doctor Strange grossed a worldwide total of $677 million when it was released back in 2016, which at the time was the highest amount earned by a Marvel Cinematic Universe film featuring a character in their solo debut. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed back in June that a sequel would be happening, and with Derrickson now confirmed to return, we can expect to hear more about the sequel in the coming year. In the meantime, Cumberbatch, who recently voiced The Grinch, will next be seen in the TV movie Brexit: The Uncivil War.
