Sam Smith to Sing Latest Bond Theme for Spectre

Aside from being one of the longest continually-running, and third highest grossing, film series to date, the James Bond films have also resulted in some of the most widely recognised and successful film music of all time. Seriously, I challenge you to not know a Bond theme song. Then I challenge you to not love them all. Even just a little bit, you know they’re all classics. Well, maybe not all of them.

Anyway, with Bond about to stride elegantly, cracking wise, and swilling down martinis (or Becks…) into his twenty-fourth film entry, Spectre, the corresponding musical entry into that rich heritage has been announced as everyone’s favourite, Tom-Petty-retirement-funding, voice-of-a-heartbroken-angel, Sam Smith. Hot on the heels of the kind of world domination a Bond villain would be proud of, the 23 year old is only going to cement that further – much as previous theme contributor Adele did – with his contribution to Bond theme history, ‘Writing’s On The Wall’.

The song was co-written by Smith and Grammy award winning songwriter Jimmy Napes, who when not showing off their Grammys to each other have produced the first British male solo artist lead Bond theme since 1965 – here’s looking at you Tom Jones. Speaking on the collaboration, long-time Bond producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli (AMAZING name) said, “Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for ‘Spectre’ and with Sam’s extraordinary vocal performance, ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time.”

Discussing the wider and personal significance of landing a Bond theme, and of Bond themes in general, Smith summarised, “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Lovely chap. The song will be officially unveiled and available to stream and purchase on the 25th of September, just a month ahead of Spectre‘s world premiere on the 26th of October.
