Robert Downey Jr. Wants To Stop Being Iron Man “Before It’s Embarrassing”

If there’s one person you can point at as the patriarch of the MCU, it’s Robert Downey Jr., who’s been such a big part of everything.

Since the wildly successful project began just under ten years ago with the original Iron Man movie, the MCU has become a behemoth of success, going on to gross billions at the box office with plenty more movies on its slate to look forward to.

And Downey Jr. is at the center of it all, the man who’s probably seen and done everything there is to do in Hollywood. But he won’t be Iron Man forever, as he confirmed in an interview with News.com about his future in the franchise:

“It’s this cyclical thing. I could have said when the first ‘Avengers’ came out: ‘It’s never going to get any better than that. Everybody stop’. But to me it’s always about people and opportunities, like the Russos, who I adore. Everyone says to me it’s like a glove that fits so well. I have to start over every time but I am starting over with a pretty solid base. I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [MCU movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it’s embarrassing.”

At 52, Downey Jr. could be excused for wanting to bow out and he has totally deserved the rest if he does. He’s been the lynchpin of it all – without the huge gamble of Iron Man, no gambles would be being taken on the likes of Doctor Strange and Black Panther.

However, it won’t be for at least a couple of years just yet. Tony Stark’s arc look like concluding in the next two Avengers movies with Infinity War out next year and Avengers 4 due in 2019. Quite how they close the book on Stark’s story remains to be seen, but you just know he’ll be making quips upon his exit no matter what.
